If I go for a few days without adding to my collection, I get a little antsy.

Lately, it's a thing for Canadian Large Cents.

Step 1: We admitted we were powerless against coins.

To answer a couple of questions above. The symbols on these coins are always seem to be related to one another.

Doug, I am not intending to go for second place as I know of a couple of others with far more examples than I have obtained. The BM database contains some duplicate dies and some ancient fakes.

Sydenham proposed that the symbols represent trade guilds (collegia opificum) in "Symbols on Denarii of L. Papius and L. Roscius",Numismatic Chronicle, 1931, pp 1-13

Crawford in RRC, suggested that there is no such association with the collegia. Rather he believes they are a "random selection of pairs of everyday objects"

This symbol pair has caused some debate as to the nature of the object on the reverse. It looks like a shoe but people think it could be a wineskin as this would relate to the goblet on the obverse.

RRC illustrates 211 die pairs and a further 21 die pairs are documented in the Republican coin die database. One example has the numerals CCXLVI on both sides which has been taken to imply that there is the possibility that 246 different dies / symbol pairs were produced. Each symbol pair is generally only represented by a single die pair though there are two symbol pairs that come from two and three different die pairs.

I must admit that I don't simply obtain any Papius I can find but tend to go for ones that have some symbols that I find interesting. I have been trying to find more with symbols related to the gods/religion but they don't come up very often and thus will buy some other Papius every now and again.

I generally try and obtain decent grade example but will make do with a poor one when it is going cheap...

This is my worst grade example, which might relate to the coin above as it was allocated to the wine-vendors guild by Sydenham with symbols of Funnel strainer and hydria (two-handled vase):-

The shoe is represented on other coins such as this one with symbols of shoe and sandal:-

Might I assume that these dies were not used mixed with each other's pairings? Usually reverse dies last longer but these would seem to require throwing out both together. Of course it is possible that non of these dies was used to failure or even bad wear but a new die set was put in use daily.

Doug,
You are correct, the dies were not mixed with one another but kept in pairs.

Interesting coins Martin!

As for obsession, I seem to remember John Brooker, the collector of Charles I coinage, had over 1500 coins in his collection, many similar with minor legend variations or over marks. Richard Lockett's collection took 13 auctions over a period of five years to dispose of it.

I suspect most of us have rather a way to go before we could think of competing on those scales! But in the end a degree of obsession is what turns just collecting into a numismatic study, no?

I have a question about this coin, forgive me as I am a 'noob' and I am sure it is an excellent coin but the 'v' splits are very regular and from the pictures it appears to have small pockets of air burst marks as from a cast coin, if this is a genuine coin then how am I best to distinguish a replica from a genuine?

In this case the flans are cast and serrated before striking. The coin is from a known die and variation. Hope this helps.

...and you call yourself a noob!
