A bit of overzealous polishing of the die, towards the latter part of its life. The sharp edge of the incuse devices gets slightly rounded, and metal can flow in the polished area of the fields. This is very common for 1952 dates, for some reason. However, it gets worse - here is a baggy one from a BU roll, and the higher points of the die (lower parts of the devices) have almost been polished off.
