Ok, I am new here. but in looking at the forums, here's my question, especially in this part of the forum-
i LOVE seeing everyone's buys and sharing, I love it and lots of you guys drive me crazy with your world bullion collections as an example.
BUT.....
aren't you guys worried about showing all your purchases for the ENTIRE world to see? I mean this stuff is NEVER going away.. this site and its contents, as an example, will be put in a cache, never to be lost.
So how do you guys feel about showing your purchases and what not?
I;ll follow up later...

I get where youre going with it but its not like the pictures have identifying features in them. Theres not much people could use to figure out where its being kept.

Even IF someone wants to put in the detective work into somehow trying to track me down... 1) I don't have THAT much to be bothered. 2) That individual out there in the world would have to be fairly local otherwise its not worth their while to come visit. 3) They should know I don't keep my stuff in my house. 4) No guarantees that If they found out where someone else was, that they would even have their stack with them either. 5) Many people have non portable safes that would make it near impossible to move. And good luck opening it. 6) They would also have to make sure the owner isn't home either...guns and ammo are plenty for many people. Personally I would be far more concerned about someone nearby who "somehow" found out that I have a small stash and word of mouth gets the word passed down and what not before I'm ever concerned about someone finding me VIA the http://www. And again, they can ransack the house all they want and not find anything.

Worried ... Never I tend to come off as a very intimidating person in real life. Being covered in tattoos and having a Love for Harley's tends to create that image. My collection of Precious metals is nothing compared to my gun collection. ( yes we have guns in Canada)
I enjoy sharing my stash with fellow members as I tend to buy rarer bars not seen often. Also
My PMz are in a safe that A) cannot be removed (we are talking well over 10000 pounds) B) in a location that I only know of

@bb21----Agree w/ what you said, but... If just one can figure it out and it's the "wrong one," then that's definitely one too many... @swrbxxx---The only ones of us who needn't worry about being vulnerable to the bad dogs are those who are bullet-proof and immortal. Tats, bikes & guns are cool but we're all susceptible to a well-placed .45 or blade. I read posts/threads yesterday about recently purchased fakes of 1oz modest-premium silver bullion coins. That news bothered me greatly, because it indicates an alarmingly low bottom end for the bad dogs out there. I mean, really---counterfeiting a $50 piece? How much of a profit margin can there be in that? Answer = evidently enough, and the bad dogs are HUNGRY and highly motivated.
Anyhow (and back on point here) -- with that kind of thing going on at that level, it makes me paranoid and focuses me intensely on safety, security and anonymity. We're all viewed as fair game, the season is always open and there are no regs that govern those who hunt us.
The bottom line is that there's no such thing as "too much" when it comes to safety.

Quote: @bb21----Agree w/ what you said, but... If just one can figure it out and it's the "wrong one," then that's definitely one too many... Not sure I get what youre saying. Just being on the forum implies you have something so really any post would make you as much of a target as a picture. Plus for the most part criminals want things that are easily unloaded. cash jewelry, electronics. Not a thousand pounds worth of silver to lug around from some of the posts. If thats what theyre looking for its easier and much more common to follow someone home from a coin show and do a smash and grab if they leave it in the car for a few minutes to go inside or just have a quick stick up there and get out fast.

How do I feel about it? No worries here either. Crooks invariably go after easy prey, and I'm anything but. Obscurity is the best defense against theft/robbery, and the first precaution anyone sharing what they have online should take is to stay unidentifiable. Add to that safe, security system(s), Guns/Ammo etc. etc. I do see some young stackers who are a little too eager to post PM shipment unboxing videos on youtube without covering their name/address or maintaining anonymity from time to time. There's a right way and a wrong way to do most things and if you like to show off your PM hoard and enjoy seeing others do the same online, obviously some common sense discretion is warranted.

PS also forgot to add like others have mentioned most stackers really like guns too. PM forums really good double as a guns and ammo website as well which will deter most common criminals.

I have to agree, I'm not generally worried, but I'm also not gonna say I'm "never" worried, because even the most prepared can get taken.. I have friends, well a friend, who as myself own many firearms and his front door was kicked in and before he could grab a pistol he was beaten to near death and robbed (not coins/bullion, but he lost alot!) so you can never be too careful and most of us don't have a gun on us 24/7, example- shower & most people take the gun off when home because they feel safe but home invasions can happen fast... Very fast... As mentioned I'm more worried of word of mouth or even a random robbery than someone tracking me down through here.. But I have a nice, heavy safe thats also bolted to the floor and then there's my dog... (A Staffordshire Bull Terrier) and if they get past her there gonna be wishing for a dog bite.... (In all seriousness though, one of the BEST deterrents for robbery is a dog...criminals look for signs and/or dog poo before entering homes, even if their armed they usually don't wanna deal with a mouth full of teeth)

I agree with NathanASE. Dogs can be a great deterrent of crime. People just don't want to have to deal with a dog. Dogs are a wonderful form of protection and thieves like easy targets. I mean, I live in a neighborhood that is said to be a "bad area", but there is rarely any crime in this "bad area". So, I'm not worried at all because I'm with two dogs and a low crime rate.

the least thing I worry about is showing my purchases on site and then be scared of some crook that is here to come down to my place and take it ... More likely that the crook that might spot me from local coin shop will hunt me down than any member of the forum.
Be less paranoid and count your risks properly

I agree that I am more worried about getting mugged leaving a coin shop/show, or carrying a box of nickels from the bank to my car than I am worried about getting robbed for my coins specifically though this site.
Don't get me wrong, I am worried as much as the next guy about someone breaking into my home and take the correct steps to prevent that... but I seriously doubt that they would do so based on what I post on this site, and I don't think they would find my collection because I don't keep the collection at home.

I appreciate everyone's comments, interesting.
My thing is, thieves have used technology to find out who has what and work to piece clues by what posters say, whether it be FB, back in the day it was MySpace but these guys do piece things together and match whatever bits of info they can.
I have ready about it over and over, the more you say about yourself, they will stalk. and if not that, they will show up and make friends and clean people out when they LEAST expect it.
So its interesting to see how most everyone isn't really worried about showing stuff here.

Its true that does happen but FB and Myspace are much more invasive to privacy. Here they only get the info thats shown in the picture which is usually just a bar. Even if you said you lived in South Dakota that really wont do anything to help them. FB is real easy to figure out what someone does aside from the fact most people list everything about themselves on there, just browsing pictures you usually get shots of their home/work/school/places they go ect then all theyd have to do is wait for the status update about how no one is home and they were good to go.

I think this may refer to me to an extent ;)
To be honest I show my stuff here for two reasons. One, it allows me to keep track of my purchases and the prices I paid through the threads I write on. And second, we are all coin and bullion lovers so I figure I should share the wealth as I love when people take time to post pictures of their beauties.
As for the safety I completely understand what you are saying. I personally own a 1960s era bomb-shelter and cemented in a 2000lb postal vault. So unless you know where it is, can get past the alarm and can crack the safe I feel as if I am safe. I do keep two vaults though one for my bullion and one for my sets. The one with my sets is easily accessible to me so I can play with them as I love playing with my coins.
Ok so lets say you figure out where my vaults you better hope you can get through my stockpile of guns and ammo. Many of us on here are gun lovers too but the mods get upset when we talk about them. I own a business so I keep my 1911 on me at all times. People that come for my things or family are gonna pay the ultimate price.
Nathan, I love the Pit he is a real beauty.

One thing to keep in mind when posting pictures is some cameras now have GPS tags, especially smart phone pics that ID the location exactly.
