I suppose your'e right, some people may prefer that.. I dont personally think that having one large block is better. You cant sell just a few ounces if you want to and who knows, maybe thise dimes would be worth more than their silver value some day. You only have one chance at that... once you melt it, its gone forever.
Im with jbuck.. garage full of dimes? YES PLEASE!

Given the choice, I am taking the dimes. Maybe I am an odd duck, but I am okay with that.

I agree. The 5 oz pucks are about as high as I would be comfortable in one coin/bar. MAYBE a 10 oz but thats the highest. The others arent liquid enough for me and the cost generally destroys all the premium, then of course if youre trying to sell because silver is falling no one will want a 100 oz bar during that time.

I may feel differently if I owned a pawn store or a shop I was trying to sell it in. A lot of it probably has to do with what the intentions were for getting the coins, if you just wanted the silver bars could be tempting

The other thing to remember is the term melt value is a full retail amount. It is based on the full retail price of an ounce of pure gold or silver. So while the just short of one ounce of 90% silver in a Morgan is currently worth 24.92, that is a full retail price. Now, unless the Morgan is pretty much a slick piece of silver, barely recognizable as a coin, you are not going to get a Morgan for that cheap. Nor should you sell it that low.

You will see ( and did see in this thread) people call coins junk silver. Unless the coin has gone through the aforementioned blender, that term is badly used. NO coin is junk that is not horribly damaged. Low grade examples of coins such as Franklins, Kennedys, Walkers, Mercurys and Barbers will often only sell at their silver value, or melt. And many times these coins are referred to as junk. Coins such as Morgans and Peace dollars are seldom traded as melt because they DO hold a premium over silver value, even in lower grades.

As pointed out in another thread, these "melt" coins are seldom actual melted...or at least that has been true up until lately. With silver reserves being depleted faster and faster, I am of the opinion that more of these low grade coins are actually getting melted vs being traded as "bullion".

To buy coins at or near melt price you can go to places like APMEX who sell rolls of silver coins at close to bullion prices. Unless you happen upon the right connections, you are highly unlikely to get these coins at or below melt.

as of December 2006 it is illegal to melt down US Minted Pennies and Nickels, and there is a $10,000 fine to help enforce the law. It is legal however to melt down silver dollars, half dollars, dimes, quarters for their content... so sell them to me instead :)

But those were not offered in the original choice!

As long as we are expanding parameters, I have a nice, cozy corner for stacking 40% Silver Eisenhower dollars.

Dimes are my JAM! I would never pass up a silver coin of any kind.. but I have always preferred dimes.

Anyone see the episode of Pawn Stars where the guy had like $111,000 in silver quarters, dimes and bars? The majority of it was like a 70 pound bar.
I think I drooled a bit watching that.

Chances are, you got that because the people behind the link have done something so offensive to us that we don't allow that link in the forum any more.

A flea market vendor I know quite well was strapped for cash this summer.
I bought a 10 oz asw lot of proof coins AT the current price of silver a while back and doubled my money selling them as collector coins.
The owner was offered 75 percent of "melt" for fast cash so I bought them for full melt value.
The seller was way happy and so was I.

Once silver's past $100/oz., Dimes, Quarters and 40% JFK's will be a lot more popular.
