as my first post stated I was given a large bag of coins...there must be at least 3000 coins mostly european but some from other countries too..i was wondering if anyone could give me an idea on what to look for..the coins are of no use to myself but I'm affraid to throw them away as you never know what your putting in the bin..most coins are 20th century..any heads up would be great .and maybe i'll find one of those coins that has been missing from your collections thanks for any help as you guys know what you are talkin about...

rg69:

Those 3,000 coins could be the start of an abiding numismatic interest within you.
You will need to borrow beg or buy a copy of Krause World coins, to have fun identifying them for yourself.
The cheapest way to do this is to get a old copy for not too much money.
I have had a few old copies but I have given them away, to be replaced my more recent used copies, for not too much money.

Hi Rg

I was in the same position as you not to long ago, a big bag of old dirty coins that belonged to my Great Grandfather. It was a matter of looking at every coin ( get yourself a decent Jewelers Loupe) and do research on each.

Sites I use are

http://en.numista.com/

http://www.ngccoin.com/index.aspx

http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/

If you do not know what it is do a google (image) search using the lettering.

Once you have identified all the coins go back and check them for die errors etc.

If you do it properly it will take you a lot of time but to be honest I find the investigation into each coin more fascinating than the appearance of most coins, I do say most because some are absolutely stunning works of art.

Good luck

Oh and if you don't feel like doing it let me know and I will gladly take your rubbish away.

Separate any silver from clad, and copper from clad as well. To get you started anyway
