As I was sorting out my numismatic books and magazines this past week (in storage at least 7 years), the cover page of "Error Scope" Vol 12, #2, March/April 2003 caught my eye on a Special inside: "Invisible Strikes".

On page 7 is a feature titled "Invisible Strikes: A Closer Look" by Mike Diamond, and was impressed with this type of error. I assume all the photos are copyright protected and therefore will not post any magazine photos here.

The lack of design & weak strikes on in-collar strikes had me re-examine some of the weak struck coins and see if they fall in this category, or if they are common indents.

The first coin is a 2001 LMC that at 1st glance, thought it was struck with a late stage capped die, and then thinking with the indent/indents that it may be something different.
When I submitted it to SEGS I listed it as a centered and partial indent strike, and received it back with that designation.

The second coin is a 5 Rupees from India that was struck in collar, with a strong reverse strike and what looks like a double indent showing zero design. I have many Indent Errors from India, along with a few extremely weak strikes that looks like die adjustment strikes. All the other indents, especially the thicker 5 Rupees coins are deep indents, with some looking like a baseball cap. This is the only weak indent and may be in the family of Invisible Strikes, not really sure and hopefully Mr. Diamond views this thread and comments on the exact type of errors these two are.

It's an error that you'd be lucky to come across. Neither of the two that you posted look like it to me. The error is basically a weak strike where another coin/planchet in the collar overlaps the coin being struck so as to only give design to a small area on one side of the coin. I just went to look for an article that describes it better than I ever could, (I don't think it's the one you're talking about, though). Here it is: http://minterrornews.com/news-8-5-0..._strike.html

Thanks, I'm a bit puzzled on just how the in-collar indents with no edge deformation are struck as most of the indent strikes I own show edge deformation.

I now believe the top coin is not what it is labeled as, and it also looks like three indents staggered, something I never seen on a coin struck with a capped die (if that is what it really is).

The India coin is another question mark, the only one indent with no detail in the thousands of India errors I had purchased.
