Does anyone know whats up with the lack of Late Byzantine coinage in the marketplace? I can't seem to find much after like 1200 AD and only one or two pieces of Michael IX around 1300 AD. There really doesn't seem to be much of the Palaiologos dynasty. Is this a result of internal fracturing of the empire? Crusades? I also can't find any early Ottoman coinage from the 15th century. Are these extremely rare? Can anyone shine some light on this one?

Slow day on the CCF Ancients eh?

Coins of the late Byzantine era have always been scarce.
By 1200 AD, the Byzantine Empire had shrunk to a mere shadow of what it was 600 years earlier.
Islamic coinage of this period is easier to find

Most of Asia Minor was under Islamic influence by 1200, and by this time Islamic coinage is of better metals and can for some, can be more interesting to collect.

I was hoping to see some of the late era coins posted here. Didn't know how scarce they are.

In the latter part of the Byzantine empire the empire was reduced to very small area and not many coins were struck. The coins that were made are scarce. I have yet to find a coin later than the 1270's.

An Akche from the reign of Sultan Bayezid II circa 1481 â€" 1512 A D.

So, early Ottoman coins are out there to buy.

This thread made me curious about the looks of the late date coins. Found this one at Wildwinds and if I didn't see this I would not have a clue as to where this was from.

Constantine XI. 1448-1453. AR one-eighth Stavraton (0.65 gm). [I]C-[XC], nimbate bust of Christ / K T T N, crowned, facing bust of Constantine; dots above and below the letters. DOC 1509; Sear -.

That crusty Constantine XI is probably boo-koo bucks. At least I know what one kind of looks like now. I must stay vigilant.

I figured this would be right up VK's alley. Hes into the the dark age coinage, and has a good eye for that stuff. How I need to know more. There is so much coinage from all over the place sometimes I wonder far from my comfort zone.

Yes but my wallet isn't

With the late Byzantine Empire, it was basically the late Western Roman Empire all over again. And like late Western coinage, late Byzantine coinage gets scarce, really scarce. I would probably make more of an effort to locate cheaper ones (if they even exist ) if I still wasn't stuck in my Roman/Dark Ages world

Yeah I wouldn't mind having a Constantine XI or even of an earlier emperor of that era. Think about it: having one of the last Roman coins ever made, and it wouldn't have even been that long ago (only around 600 years ago!).

Also, with regards to Ottoman coinage of that time, I don't really think they are too hard to find; I believe I saw a few cheaper ones listed (I remember seeing one from the 1430s). My coin that Masis posted dates to 1482 (only 29 years earlier the city it was minted in, Constantinople, was still Byzantine).

I distinctly remember dougsmit, sometime earlier this year, posting a coin of the Byzantine emperor immediately preceding Constantine XI.

These coins do exist but in very small numbers and as stated earlier an very expensive. The style of these later coins reflect the decline of the empire and there cruder than normal appearance. The Constantine XI and Dougs coin are two nice and rare example.
