I saw it, I wanted it, I bought it! It's one of my favorite Mythical Creatures. I guess I'm in the minority though since it has a mint of 5000 pieces and it's still available. Anyone else thinking about buying this one? Why or why not?

With all my appreciation to the RAM and Perth Mint production (I think it started from my travel to Australia, from the design of their circulation coins) - I try to avoid the "painted" issues, or at least where the main object painted (not colorized, but painted). And if I remember correctly - all the Mythical Creatures series contains "painted" coins.

Yes, that's true. All the coins in the series are painted. I kind of like it. Of course, I'm worried that handling will result in the paint rubbing off over time.

I bought it too. Although this one isn't too spectacular, I think the rest will, making them a good set.

Do you have any idea what other coins will be in the set? Maybe I missed that on the website?

1oz silver pad printed and not even an Australian coin But from some obscure island nation at $114 plus postage. I think I will give this one a wide miss No worries tho If you don't like it the Perth Mint will buy it back for $27.91

Yes indeed Trout, their generosity ($27.91) is only exceeded by their outstanding commitment to donate to UNICEF (a whole dollar per coin, at $114 they could have made it $10. Their marketing man must have worked for McDonalds at one time .... no insult intended on either party as any donations to charities are goooood). Tuvalu, thanks to your comment I know where it is now! NNNE of Fiji, NW of Samoa, midway Australia and Hawaii, population around 10,000. It used to be called Ellice Islands (or Elloupe Islands if denny5 is reading ..... so sorry, I still can't help it )

I'm not worried about the coin being legal tender of a small island. It's something I will enjoy! I'll be a day 1 buyer of the Unicorn for sure.

I received my coin today. It looks great by eye inspection but under magnification it looks like hair/lint may be on the surface.
Should I open the coin and use canned air or something? Thoughts?
How do I open the plastic---would I have to break it?

The capsules of most of today's mint-encapsulated coins are not glued or otherwise permanently sealed. So, you shouldn't have to break it to open it. But I haven't seen this particular coin/capsule, so proceed carefully and don't force it.
I have had the same issue with a few coins. With each, I carefully opened the capsule (while wearing cotton gloves) and used a can of compressed air to blow the lint away. No detrimental effects on any of these coins.

I ALWAYS remove the coins from these capsules, just get a box cutter/Stanley knife and place it in the join and twist. It may take a couple of goes but the capsule will open without damage. You can then use the canned air and replace the coin, or you can put the coin in a 2x2 then in an album ( My preferred option)
