Just wanted to say hello to the "experts" in here.
I have loved Roman history for as long as I could remember. Last week friend of mine, who is a Ancient Civilizations teacher brought me some Roman coins. I have to admit that I could feel history through those coins and wondered who might have held them 2000 years ago. At that moment I was hooked.
I took the plunge and bought some hoard coins from Crusty Romans and can't wait for them to arrive.
For me the adventure will be in the discovery of the coins and linking them to their past. I will be bringing some of the coins into the school so the "ancient civs" class can be a part of the experience as well.
I know I'll be leaning on the experts in here for advice in the near future and hopefully after a while I'll be able to contribute a little myself.

I am waiting on some coins from Crusty Romans...I bought 1/16 of a kg (smallest amount) from their Plutus Hoard. I think I am giong to try a few different companies and see which provide the best service.
Does anyone have any advice on this? As I said before I'm an in it for the adventure more than anything.

Cleaning them is not everybody's cup of tea but http://www.dirtyoldcoins.com/ always seems to get good reviews. I think there is also a Canadian (handy for you!) seller of uncleans on ebay who seems to be well thought of, will try to remember the name or find them online.

Looks like the Canadian seller I was thinking of has gone, think they were called 'purse of the legionary', pricey but they had decent stuff. Cant seem to find them on ebay, shame. I'm sure some of our coin cleaners will be able to put you onto good sellers. Maybe a little dangerous for a beginner (fakes, bad sellers etc) but searching ebay UK for 'Roman detector finds' and similar sometimes comes up with some surprisingly good, cheap and honest coins.

I'll definitely post pictures of the coins as they come in.
Here's to the adventure (and from what I hear a lot of patience)!

Hatter: to the world of ancient coins! If you are just starting out stay away from ebay for a long time. To use a modification of a quote from Sap: 'If you are learning to swim, stay away from the sharks!' Only use ebay with sellers that are known reputable dealers. Stick with late Roman bronze coins to begin with, and perhaps a few of the earlier silver antoninianii from Gordian 111 onwards. I notice you are from Canada. I would suggest that you may give Calgary Coins a try. They also have some excellent supporting articles on their website. Generally I would suggest that you read as much as you can on Roman history and Roman coinage history, then about Roman coins in particular, such as Sear. There are lots of good knowledgeable folks here in the CCF who would be more than happy to help you.

I'll definitely be taking people up on the offers of help/identification.
While I wait for my uncleaned coins to show up can anyone suggest some research material.
Also, which coins would be the best to initially acquire for a novice.
Thanks again.
