I have a Murcury dime that has MS 63 details but has no luster, is it a sign that I has been cleaned? If so how much will the value be effected? Thanks

If the holder says details then it has been cleaned and that loses almost all of the value.

Its possibly over dipped.

It may have been dipped too many times or for too long. Additionally, it might have such a thick layer of original toning and skin that the luster is essentially killed. In such instances, grading companies hold the grade lower because of the impeded luster. I own a Washington quarter that is very clean or marks and is truck well, but the reverse has such dead luster from the thick toning that the coin graded only MS64.

It may well lose some value, but not almost all. It depends on why there is a lack of luster. Lets see some pics and perhaps we can tell.

For some reason it will only allow me to post this one right now. I will try again later but the front looks the same.

It was breaded by the dealer that I bought it from as MS 62. I paid $35 for it.

It appears AU (at best) to me.

Those are tough images to interpret, but it looks to me that it might be an AU that has fairly original skin.

dsfreeworld: Your referencing ebay stuff. Bidding may well take them up, up, up. And a $35 cost may seam high but no lost in mail, no wrong coin sent, no postage, no handling, no ebay or paypal charges. And if you purchased it from a dealer, you may get to know him and later find better deals. Just because someone says you coulda, might have, shoulda, done better, doesn't make it so. You could have been waiting for something in the mail that never comes. Be happy with what you now have and don't look back at what coulda, shoulda, woulda have been.

i never responded to a post like I'm about to, but JC, your buggin' dude... i guess you've been burnt off the bay and I guess your okay with a guy paying $35 for a raw AU50 coin that he could look hard, other than ebay, but the web in general, and find someone else to sell him A) that same coin for half the price and/or B) a slabbed/raw true MS for what he paid and forget this "I'll let the local dealer ream my backside until he gets to know me and gives me a better deal"...become an educated buyer and look for the best bang for your buck each and every time... 'nuff said
