Some fakes are so fake that I don't think there is any intention to deceive.

So I tracked down the buyer's ID and emailed him. Hopefully ebay will cover that--better to spend that $42 on a nice dinner than a brass slug.

- Nice one. BTW how did you do this? I've tried in the past and failed. Can it only be done if the one party leaves feedback so a username can be seen?

Yes--I waited for the buyer to leave feedback, followed their link back and sent them a link to here.
It doesn't work all the time, such as with private auctions.
