Yeah...pretty obvious that's a tourist curio, perhaps sold at the Colosseum in Rome? Just for fun, here's the real coin to compare: Real: Titus caesar, 69 â€" 79 Sestertius 80-81, Æ 25.92 g. Flavian amphitheatre (The Colosseum); on l., . Rev. IMP T CAES VESP AVG P M TR P P P COS VIII Titus seated l. on curule chair, holding branch and scroll; below, on either side, pile of arms. In field, S â€" C. C 400. BMC 190. RIC 184. Kent-Hirmer pl. 68, 239. CBN 189

That's cool that you guys spotted this fake, but not being an ancient collector and trying to learn from this forum, what is fake about it or what should I be looking at? Disregard, DVCollector posted his reply as I was typing my response.

Yeah, not super rare but certainly rare - and the reverse is about as Roman as it gets, surprisingly the Colosseum is not on that many coins. Vespasian started building it and it was ultimately finished by his son Titus. I saw one in the British Museum - awesome looking coin Edit to add picture.

Yes, I figured that eye appeal and historical interest played a part in value.

I was just cruising through ebay trying to find recent prices realized for some coins (to see if it was worth putting mine up) and I spotted it. I had to laugh, the fake is just so crappy. I feel bad for the buyer, who will get a nasty let down when they go to sell it. Maybe they'll sell it agian on ebay and keep the parade of fakes running. He might even make his $46 back from some other unwary soul. A local curio is probably right. Some more junk to sell to the tourists.

Wouldn't it being perfectly round be one of the tip offs? It looks like an ancient coin superimposed over a modern, machined blank.

Quote: Wouldn't it being perfectly round be one of the tip offs? Not always. While uncommon, some authentic ancients did get their strikes dead-center. It's usually the fields, the style, and the quality that are the tip-offs.
