I'm looking for some good online sites that are trustworthy and give good prices on their currency. Since many of you here have probably purchased online, which sites do you use or which sites do you suggest I check?

Hi, I can say from my experience that both Proxybid and ebay generally provide the greatest variety of items but you still must be disciplined when bidding on any item anywhere: 1) Always check a seller's purchasing and selling feedback before placing your bid. 2) Check ‘Complete Listings' to review the most recent selling price of your item by choosing the two week span preceding your intended purchase/bid date. 3) Do not let the emotion of any auction overtake you and always repeat this phase, "I most likely can live without this item since the bidding price is exceeding my initial target. There will most likely always be another chance to purchase another similar item at a possibly even cheaper price in the future." This prevents you from overbidding. 4) For even greater post-sale insurance investigate ‘buyer protection plans' if applicable by any auction company. Good luck and keep us posted on your results. mdpmedia

Great advice. I would only add to get yourself educated in the area you wish to collect. Learn about the notes (study books, etc.), their rarity, their grades, their prices by using past history from various auctions ( ebay and HA, etc.), their varieties (if any), etc. That way you can stay on track and not over pay by too much and be able to spot a good deal when you see one. Welcome aboard to the world of paper money, good luck and enjoy it. Jim

I've been collecting paper money for a little while now, but I've never tried purchasing offline. I've purchased from dealers and shows in the past and I just wanted some advice or any tips about online purchasing. Great advice from both of you. Thank-you!

One other thing I didn't mention. You can check to see if the dealer is a member of the PCDA (Professional Currency Dealers Assoc.). If so, you are pretty sure you will be OK.
Most dealers have website where you can buy currency or at shows. They will bring it with them to a show near you if you request. That way you can have a look before buying. Most have return policies though.
I would stay away from places like craiglist, etc.

I don't make recommendations lightly, but one person I would recommend is Vern Potter. He has his inventory listed with prices, photo's, and grades and is one of the most reputable dealers I know. Very strict grading and extremely knowledgable. He also has one of the largest inventories around. He is a longtime member of PCDA and SPMC. You might also try checking out the advertisers in the Paper Money Journal which is the publication of The Society of Paper Money Collectors.

I would suggest ebay, a major auction house, or working with someone personally at a show. Once you get advanced you will have to rely on dealers and major auctions.

I collect primarily radars/repeaters, and have found that my very best purchases have come from doing private deals with various e-Bay sellers. Most are willing to lower their prices significantly in order to save the e-Bay/PayPal fees. Ends up being a win-win for both parties.

Several other outstanding sites are Don C. Kelly and Alex Perakis. I've dealt with Kelly, there's no better professional in the business, especially when it comes to nationals.
