OK. I have a tough one for you guys. Being a former Coastie I decided to buy this re-issue award given to Rasmus Midgett for his actions saving people from a shipwreck. The ship was the Priscilla. The event occurred on August 18, 1899. HOWEVER, my medal is a mis- stamped and the date shown on my piece is August 18, 1889. This medal is 2 inches in diameter and appears to be made of bronze. There are no makers marks. I've seen these on ebay before and they have prices all over the map. I'm just trying to figure out if the wrong date version carries any premium or maybe hurts the value. I'd like to sell this and do not want to misrepresent the piece. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

This may be of some help from another site.

I don't have historical records for the Priscilla but as an example the Metis Shipwreck medals would have been struck for the public around 1875 -1876. The mint records show 5,323 bronze medals struck in 1874 and 7,852 for 1875 and 14,348 for 1876.

These beautiful bronze medals often appear in exonumia sales. Value Range:$80 - $150.

Thanks. I did see that Site. I saw some examples for sale with both the correct date and the wrong date but I cannot find any mention of the wrong date. I'm going to assume the wrong date was caught during production and corrected with the wrong dates being released and not being destroyed. I can imagine the maker thinking "Nobody will notice and I don't want to lose money."

If there are several pieces with the wrong date, I would consider it a variety. A century ago, many were not literate or someone was careless with the facts. Would be interesting to know the whole story.
