Bought this coin today with very little description by the seller other than this Roman Empire Maximinus I 286-305 AD AE Follis of Aquileia. VF. Bust/Genius. Size: 28 mm I've been looking for a catalog number and the closest I can find is RIC VI 25b. There are differences in the text but would this be the same coin?

Minor differences in text are okay... Most coins do not have many, if any, die matches surviving after two millenium.

Thanks bobbyh, much appreciated. Guess I need to double check what I buy from this particular dealer in the future. Is Maximianus and Maximian Herculius the same ruler? Hate to keep asking dumb questions but this is all new to me.

Yes, they are the same. Before you purchase a coin always look it up and investigate it. That's what I do. Usually, I always look it up first and attribute. A lot of dealers attributions are wrong. I found that out quick when I first started collecting. I'll still purchase a coin if the attribution is wrong.

Thanks for the tip Gil-Galad. I just learned that lesson and took for granted that dealers that specialize in these would have them attributed correctly. I've already got this ruler but I sure like this coin.

Not a problem. Again, I suggest learning how to read these Roman Imperial coins. Time to start doing some reading. This is from Doug Smith, he posts here but I recommend reading his site as a beginner. Starting with the beginner section. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/You can learn all kinds of things including reading coins, grading coins, photographing coins, etc.

Quote: Is Maximianus and Maximian Herculius the same ruler? Yes, same person - full name as Emperor was Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maximianus Herculius Augustus, shortened to Maximian in English and in modern times. It should be pointed out that in other languages the name can be slightly different again. These are confusing at first with so many similarly named Emperors around the same time, everyone gets mixed up with these at first. Quote: Guess I need to double check what I buy from this particular dealer If you stick with collecting ancients you'll be surprised by how many coins are mis-attributed by sellers! Maximianus and Galerius are often confused so be careful with these coins.

I really appreciate Gil's kind words regarding my pages but since this topic is covered by one of them rather specifically I'll suggest anyone not comfortable with the Max names check it out: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/do...ith/max.htmlThere are a few places in ancient numismatics that almost seem to have been traps set to confuse collectors millennia later. Constantine's family, the Antoninus Pius bunch and the Maxes come to mind first but there are probably others.
