I have a Roman silver denarius from 122 BC, minted in Rome, Moneyer Quintus minucius Rufus. I has pretty decent detail, but the surface is quite porous and pitted (hopefully you can see in the pictures). I was wondering what possible causes there are for this kind of pitting. Also, what grade would you think this coin is in?

It's a nice coin and not too pourous. I'm not sure what caused it though.

The copper in a Silver Denarius (as the silver used was an alloy) corroded.
This causes the pits.

It is still a nice coin!

It appears to have crystallized as well. I have several silver coins with crystallization. I see nothing to make me question this coins authenticity, and the detail is still fairly sharp (features on horse head). I would grade this a F+ to VF. I would also welcome it into my collection of Roman Republics.
