We had a breif thread about scripts a few days ago, thought I would post these that I recently bought, the same coin in three different scripts. All date to between 995-997AD, they, and a number of others from around the same time should be on their way to me soon :)

I saw a lot of these coming in by customers at my show yesterday, one was 3in. across, most were 1200's to 1600's, I know nothing about these and trying to stay away from them too, to many to collect....

You are building a fine collection!! Northern Song calligraphy styles and varieties are explained on the Calgary Coin website. It has been suggested calligraphy variations were used as mint and date control marks.

I bought 72 last night alone Your fault, you got me interested

Intend to cherry pick the lots then re-sell a few when they arrive, that way I get to handle a lot for little money.

Also bought a couple of none coin books about China to help me understand it all, this one is proving a good read http://www.thamesandhudson.com/China/9780500251423.

Was able to pick it up for £5 at a discount book store.

I'm not 100% sure chrsmat71 - I'm a noob myself (its reminded me how daunting ancients are to newcomers!)

Glad you know how I feel but I have just tried identifying some cash coins today.

Haha. I'll take the blame for that. Glad that you like ancient Chinese coins. I myself am going to get a few more as money and time allows.

Oh yeah, it was quite confusing at first but my knowledge of moderns did help a bit. Thankfully, there is more than enough information and documentation online to get started. I have way more to learn though. I don't mind, if I knew it all right away I might lose interest. Who knows.

Oh, your not alone, don't worry, most confusing aspect so far is that I'm finding around three different spellings for the Emperors names, often they are different enough to mean I cant make the connection between them!

Thanks for the link aiglet7, more reading required
