I just was reviewing the number of those 5 packs of the 2012 HMS Shannon coin. I noticed in one of the coins, that it looked unusual. I examined the coin much closer and noticed the year 1812 is so faint, and that the portrait of the individual between the security features at the bottom of the coin is just a ghostly blob. The ship at the 3 o'clock position is also blurry. The coin overall does not appear to be as sharp when compared to the other coins in the package. Is this considered a weak struck? Any idea to value of this $2 coin error?

It is the coin on the right in the images below.

Could be a weak strike, a strike through or something else - is very hard to be sure when looking through the pliofilm on a picture.

Hi T_y,

Good to hear from you. Thank you for your input. I've taken a photo using my camera this time. Hope it's a bit clearer. Thank you.

Sailing ships and horses always look good on coins.

Looks to me like a filled die on the 1812. I don't think its a weak strike because the main ship looks fine

It is interesting how such an error passes through the quality control standards at the Mint, and stuck in the pliofilm.

the Winnipeg mint pounds toonies out at around 200 per minute. all they are worried about the minium specs for each coin.

It really looks like a filled die. A very interesting coin!

Regarding quality control: there is none. The Mint produces widgets. The widgets have to comply with technical specs, not esthetical. Even specimen and proof coins, including NCLT are appalling. There a few NCLT coins being offered as errors when in reality they are just the result of sloppy workmanship.

I don't complain (too much). I love (true) errors.
