I never heard of these until yesterday. I purchased 2 of these medals made in 1988 by the U.S. Philadelphia Mint. They were made for the Young Astronauts. One medal is 6 ounces of .999 silver and the other medal is 12 ounces of .999 silver. A total of 18 ounces. The medals are 3 inches in diameter. They produced a meager amount of these. Only 3700 were made for the 12 ounce medal and 1075 were made for the 6 ounce medal. A little gaudy but silver is silver.

Nice pickup! They're real hefty coins. I know there is a gold one as well, with a tiny mintage of something like 40. It's HUUUGGEEE! I wish I had a pic of one.

ErrorCoins222,

I read about the coins and you are correct. They made a gold one that weighs 12 ounces. They produced 38. I bet that would be a hard one to grab. Around 20K in melt. The article claimed that congress approved the total mintage of 750,000 but only 115,000 were made (all sizes and metals included). Lots of the one ounce silver coins available on ebay. Searching Google, I found 3 (maybe 4) of the larger ones for sale. Asking price was around 100 dollars over spot. I don't think they'll bring much over spot. Mine don't have the display boxes and that my hurt getting a premium. But I do have the certificates of authenticity.

The thing looks like a can of caviar from the side. I do really like the astronaut design though

blackjack,

If I put those in my pockets I think my pants would fall down. It would give me the thug look.

basebal21,

These medals are probably cheaper than a can of caviar.
