I'm kidding of course but the fact that some person with a lot of time on their hands and nothing else better to do notched this LWC 360 degrees on both sides. I was romanticizing a bit when I said it was owned by a gunslinger or a soldier. He would have to be a great shot. This is nothing more than PMD found in my 5K penny hoard.

An interesting find. Always fun to speculate the who, why, and when.

jbuck,

I decided to count the notches and there are 41 on each side. Maybe there was a method to their madness.

I have one similar but the notches are peeled up so they stick out. Kind of looks like one of those old iron tractor tires. Wish I could get a good pic.

Could have been a soldier fighting the battle of Okinawa which lasted 82 days (1 notch per day)

ECS,

I know many who would disagree with you and say that these were not soldiers. These were US MARINES. Oorah.

You're a bigger romanticize(r) than I. Your thoughts are good ones.

You want to talk about being picked on? I was a Coastie and I have heard them all. I'm in the American Legion and I spend time with ALL veterans.

My comment was meant as a compliment to the Corps and I wasn't trying to demean the US Army. I was making a funny. No offense to ANY of our service people.

Soldiers, Marines, Airmen & Sailors do not mix well with alcohol. I'll bet the fights would be few and far between without the booze.

Looking at the notches from another point of view, they remind me of something that I tried to do on a wooden dowel on day when I had nothing else better to do. I was trying to cut a rope winding to support a wood carving that I had finished. It took me a good while to get it to look right.

Anybody who has spent time on the water has seen pilings that have rope serving as a bumper knows what I'm talking about.

The only thing missing on the coin was a notch connecting them together on both facings of the coin.

(edit) When I was a kid, I knew an old guy who said that he knew some ole gunfighters when he was kid, and he always said that only a tin horn would put notches on his piece. That's why I thought of a rope binding.

Kind of reminds me of the large cents that were notched around the rim and holed to be used as pastry wheels.
