Just looking through my inventory file and noticed that I have one coin with an odd COA. My 2005 Tall ships has an alphanumeric COA - 10560R. Just curious if others who own this coin have odd COAs too and if so, does anyone know why? Every other coin I have has a numeric COA.

Replacement, maybe the original was damaged just a guess

R for replacement seems logical but I've never heard of the mint issuing a replacement COA.

A returned coin with a damaged COA perhaps?
Can you post a scan?

I did purchase the coin directly from the mint. Really curious if all of the COAs for this coin have a letter or if I have something unique.

A replacement seems like the immediate answer, but here's what I don't understand. If it is a replacement then why would the Mint replace a COA... they would have the original COA and a piece of paper is easily movable. If a damaged coin was sent back to them without a COA, then the Mint should just replace the coin and not be concerned with the COA at all. Maybe it was the COA itself (not the coin) that was damaged, but then why not just reprint a COA with the existing number? It seems a bit odd to me.

Yup. I can't see why they would replace the COA and stick an R on it. If they reprinted it, then why not just print 10560. I have the invoice and it was ordered in Aug and shipped in Sept '05. The coin was first available for MC preorder on May 30th so there was enough time for it to be sent out, returned and then sent to me though I don't know if the mint actually does reship returned coins. I found one on ebay where the seller says the COA is 241, i.e. no 'R' or any other letter.

Check if the Year of the Rabbit lotus coin has the same thing. I remember getting 2 COAs for that coin.

I don't have the Rabbit Lotus but I think they RCM actually changed the mintage on that one, didn't they? As I recall, they issued a second COA to reflect the corrected mintage. I could be wrong though - my memory is good, but short. I am a bit surprised that no one reading this has the 3 Masted ship coin to verify the COA is normally numeric or not given that there are 18k of them out there.

There's one listed on ebay at the moment that shows a COA of 14051 - no 'R'.

At first I was like... Hmm we have a R and non-R. Time to post. Read your post, got creeped out, posted I want to buy your COA then took a picture of ours. I have idea what RCM did for this coin... The only thing is the A on Regina is further apart on the non-R
