Fake Norwegian Kroners are appearing on ebay, showing very similar 'wear' patterns on the king's portrait, as shown below. Compared to a real Kroner, the absence of protected details are probably the best diagnostic. The sellers often provide an unfocused picture of the reverse, but you may spot a faulty Kongsberg mintmark, where the hammers don't cross at right angles (detail below)--which is always the case for genuinie Kroners of this period.

Wow DVCollector. That is something that somebody new like me would never notice. Even with you pointing out exactly where and what to look at it still is hard to see. I learn something new every single day in this forum.

I had my suspicions, which were confirmed over at a Norwegian collector site (samlerforum.no). As a rule now, I won't buy old silver coins unless I'm certain of authenticity. It's one reason I focus on varieties like overdates--they're harder to fake.

That's really great--but if the rest thought that's real, they ought to get more familiar with late 19C. Norway coins--this one's pretty obvious.

One fact I recently discovered was that I am the only member who is a world specialist - they have 10 on the committee and 9 are experts in US. But I know I can vote and get over-ruled.

Not a good thing but over time perhaps the other members will have more trust in me and my reasons. I do not see them adding any more members at present.

Ebay is fortunate you're there--and given the amount of faking going on in world coins, your vote should get more weight for those.

If the Committee decide that a coin is fake during the bidding, do they tell all the bidders ?

If the Committee decide that a coin is fake after the bidding, do they tell the buyer ?

If an auction is ended during bidding the item does not appear anymore and there is no obligation for any of the bidders. All bids are cancelled and all bidders are notified the item was removed automatically.

If the auction is terminated after it ends - the high bidder is informed it has ended. NOT necessarily why. At that point if the high bidder has already paid and wants his money back he simply files a claim with ebay and (provided the payment used PayPal) the refund is automatic. Other forms of payment are far harder.

The auction also disappears so there is no feedback possible.

I have ben high bidder on a dozen auctions that were cancelled after they ended. But I knew the coins were counterfeit. I always write down the sellers name so I can contact them because I am buying counterfeits and one of the ones I lost was a GREAT counterfeit. So now I tend to pay FAST so my data is actually forwarded to the seller before a cancellation can happen. I am still protected against non-delivery if my payment went through before the cancellation. But I would run a risk if I paid AFTER the auction was cancelled. There would be no recourse if the seller kept the money and sent me nothing.

It is best to follow the rules and pay fast in my case.

Since I do not sell much on ebay and on the rare occasion that I do sell I sell ONLY REAL coins, I have not run afowl of ebay rules too much.
