hi, a few days ago I bought some scrap silver and after looking at some of the coins I noticed this was a bit rare without the motto, the oldest was a tiny hammered coin from Caesar's time. What I would like to know is...

How much is this coin worth, and is there a market for this with a hole?

i understand that the hole will take alot of the value of it but I think the quality and rarity would make this acceptable for some collectors as a choice coin incase a better one is not available.

Nice details, but it's pretty hard to tell value of a holed coin.
I'll take a shot in the dark and say 150$.

I agree it can be difficult to tell the value of a holed coin. It usually has to do with how desirable the coin is in any condition. I was looking at prices of Half Cents and think I sold one for about 20% of value without the hole. The best way to figure out how much a holed coin's worth is to look at completed auctions.

motto-less damaged ones without a hole are selling for a few hundred dollars. I think I should just put this on ebay and let you all know the results :D

How sure are you that it's really silver? (tested?) The surfaces look suspect with all those spots, look like casting bubbles.

i bought it from a coin dealer, but I will try a specific density test as soon as I can, but will the hole affect this enough to make it an unusable test?

No the hole will not affect the specific gravity.

I find it rather disconcerting that there are ALOT of scratch marks in the area where the motto would be, that could be a sign of the removal of the motto banner.

I'm not so sure about the marks; they seem contemporary to me and not nearly as heavy as they'd have to be down the left field where the banner begins.

I'm guessing this one has a shot at F15 Details. With original surfaces, that's a $750+ coin. There aren't more than a couple hundred of them in slabs, in all grades. You can expect it to retain some considerable value, even in this condition.
