Found this the other night in my pile of 93-Ds. The die gouge made it easy to find.

Good grief, I didn't see any 1993 varieties on the lists I compiled. Wonder what else I'm missing.
Do any of you know of a site that has a master list, by year/mint, that has DDOs, RPMs, everything, preferably with pictures? Seems crazy to have to flip back and forth to so many sites and different pages within the same sites. Every time I think I've compiled a complete/current list I see people posting things not on that list.
Sigh.

This is why you look at every coin. Familiarize yourself what a normal coin looks like, obverse and reverse. You will be amazed at how you will spot differences easier.

Every time I think I've compiled a complete/current list I see people posting things not on that list. There is no "master list" no single website could hold every known variety. For Lincoln Cents the best site by far is coppercoins.com, and this particular variety is the first thing you see when you type in a search for 1993-D. You have to look at all coins, all the time. There is no possible way to memorize all the small, not so important varieties. Take for instance 2009 Lincoln Cents has 131 varieties listed. Can you memorize that? Or 1960-D, there are 168 RPMs listed on CC, that does not include DDO / DDR. Like I asked, can you possibly memorize all of that? Are you planning on going coin by coin comparing it to what photos you can find. The easiest way to search is like I stated in a previous post, learn what a coin should look like. Then search for anything that does not look normal. If you think you have something, then go to a website like CC. Otherwise you are going to drive yourself nuts, get frustrated, and lose interest in variety searching altogether.

I support of what seal006 said keep in mind that most (if not all) varieties were found by someone who were not looking for that particular variety. On the other hand I do not look at "every coin". I pass the really ugly ones.

Not trying to memorize lists... just trying to type a list of dates to set aside for closer exam. More of a 'first-pass' sorting cheat sheet.
John1, I was mainly using Cherrypickers with occasional reference to LincolnCentResource and Wexler. CopperCoins wasn't working for me but it seems to be functional now, although cumbersome to use. I also bookmarked VarietyVista but without pics it was difficult for a newbie to use.
Think I'll put my cents searching on hold until I take a more in-depth look at CopperCoins, Wexler, and VarietyVista, with the goal of just making a list of dates/mm to set aside for closer exam.
This morning I did the same for State and Territory quarters, using a information from various specialty sites, VarietyVista, and anecdotal mentions in various coin forums. I put it on a Google Docs spreadsheet. No pictures, but when the time comes to sort those at least I'll have a unified list suitable for first-pass sorting.

What will you use as a criteria for what makes this list and what does not? CopperCoins does not list WAM or CAM cents, nor does it list the 88 & 88-D RDV-006 cents. These are design varieties and not die varieties, which is what CC is all about. I can help you come up with a list based on your criteria, even though I hate and do not advocate using a list.

If you must have a list try going to coppercoins.com and go through each year,P & D separately. Make a list of the ones without listed varieties. Your list will be much shorter.

DrDon-- great idea, thanks!
Seal006-- thank you for the generous offer. Perhaps I'll do a 'don't save' list instead right now. This is just for pocket change, coins currently in circulation. I don't to hoard every last coin that hits my pocket yet I don't have time to look at everything right now, so an anti-list might be the best way to go right now. I understand your philosophy of looking at each coin to become familiar with all features-- hopefully that will come to me with time and after examining many thousands of coins.

Well your screen name says it all, "this is fun". Make sure you keep it that way. Collect and search for what you want. I have chosen to concentrate on RPMs. I love the little guys. Most are affordable to buy, and many can be found in circulation. You might checkout the book Strike It Rich With Pocket Change. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Strike-It-R...em232752b6f4
