Would this be the small or large 99 type? I'm pretty sure it is the large 9's type. I just want confirmation. Also, what do you think it would grade (without the hole of course)?

What was the purpose of the holes? Necklaces?

Large 9, unfortunately in the 19th Century and early 20th century it was quite common place for hunters and trappers in the northern parts of Canada to make holes in coins.
It was done so coins could be carried via a string attacked to their waist or around their neck. This is a very difficult coin (variety) to acquire in grades above VF-20 and seldom seen in AU.
I've had an I.C.C.S. AU-55 that looks identical to that piece (but without the hole of course)that I've been trying to upgrade for the past 10 years to an MS-63, but no avail.

Thanks for the help everyone! I just wanted to make sure that it was the large 9's. When I got this coin it was attached to a small bail with an 1899 5 cent in about the same condition.
