Hi everyone , I picked up this 1898s morgan for $26 at a local pawn shop. It has really nice toning on it wich you can't really see in the pics. I was wondering if you all think it is worth sending in to be graded? Sorry the pics are not very good they are the best I can get with the camera I have available. Thank you for all your opinions in advance.

I think you have to ask yourself " to what end "
To find out what you have ? To increase the value ? Unless you think this is an MS or even a high AU grading is not going to be worth the $25 plus grading fee, because now you are into it for 50 plus dollars. If you think grading this coin which IMHO an XF is going to increase the value over raw, I would say no. If you just want to know exactly what you have regardless of the cost, then by all means.

I would only be sending it in to find out what grade it comes back as. I'm not looking to increase the value or to resell the coin. I agree that unless it comes back AU or MS there wouldn't be a point in sending it in. Thanks for your help denco7.

All you'll get from sending it in is an opinion just as subjective as that of anyone here; it's tough to rationalize. I might go as far as AU50 on this one, but it could be worn smooth and still be worth more than you paid.

Thanks SsuperDdave , that's a very good point. Maybe I will just save the money on grading and start a morgan date set I've been wanting to do for awhile and use this coin in that album.

I don't think you need to send this one in for grading - pictures show, very clearly, a coin in AU-50 grade. Coin should sell itself when you are ready to part with it ...

First, I'd go back to that pawn shop (run back) and see what other Morgans you can get for 26 dollars each. As for sending it in for grading, listen to what the others here are saying. But if you get other Morgans from this generous pawn shop, be sure to let us see them. Thanks.

This pawn shops prices are all over the place they use to have a bin full of morgan and Peace dollars that were all priced at $35 then they would have a few in card board flips for $26. I have picked up walker and Barber half dollars from them for $5 each while others were priced at $20.
I told the manager that his prices were messed up and he said didn't have time to deal with all the coins.
They rarely have anything when I go in there now so other people must have caught on to there good deals.

It's not worth to send it. As you see other people also stated the same. But it's a nice coin for sure :)

There may be some striking softness. I note that the 1898S is sometimes found soft struck. Therefore it good grade more like AU55. I agree with he other opinions that it is not worth sending in. We'll grade it for free here.

I agree you got a great dealing this coin, but I don't know there is enough value to spend more on grading .

Thanks everyone for helping me with a grade on this coin and for all your opinions. I really appreciate it. I think I'm going to take all of your advice and not send the coin in and instead put the money towards a new album and put the coin in that. Thanks again :)

If that pawn shop has any more I would also pick them up in a heartbeat if I knew where to go.

@ghostrider - I try and stop in there every month and pick up what they have. I don't get to stop in there as much as I use to since I moved a few months back. But I'm going to go there next so I will let you all know if I pick up anything good.
