Hello! after the last few months I have severely caught the ancient bug. This month I sold off some of my British milled coinage and use my profits to buy some ancients I have been after or ones which I liked the look of. For my price range I managed to get a nice selection of emperors and interesting coins for pretty reasonable prices(I think ). I don't have them in hand yet(other than the Sego) so I will update the pictures as and when I receive them. I haven't attributed them yet, I'm in the process of doing so as we speak. Apologies in advance for such a long post, I have listed them starting from the cheapest down to the most expensive. Please feel free to comment on the coins/prices as you wish COIN 1 £1.20 This was an impulse buy. I try and avoid wrecks like this however I could not sit and watch a Tiberius coin sell for £1; I placed my bid and ended up winning it for £1.20. COIN 2 £1.40 I was quite surprised that I got this for under £2, the style of the bust is what caught my eye and the fact that its in pretty reasonable shape. COIN 3 £1.65 I think the little symbol to the left of the bust indicates its from Serbia? My collection is lacking a reasonable fallen horseman and for £1.65 I couldn't go wrong. COIN 4 £3.00 I have been after a Gratian for a while now and when this one popped up with me able to combine the postage I could not resist for £3.00 COIN 5 £4.05 Not sure what this is other than its Byzantine. My byzantine collection is pretty minimal(1 coin); This one didn't seem to bad for £4.05. COIN 6 £18.00 This was on another post of mine, the colour of the coin was the main aspect which won me over. This makes it my second Tiberius. COIN 7 £20.00 When I saw this Sego pop up on ebay it was a 'must' for me considering it was minted only 10-15 miles down the road from me. COIN 8 £26.59 Im pretty sure that this is a roman Republican denarius of Aemilius Lepidus Paullus. It will be my first Republican other than a Fouree and is the one which I am most excited about receiving. For £26.59 I'm pretty pleased

Well done my friend, well done. Can't beat a deal. Those coins are nice, I don't know anything about the Sego, but I shall look to see what I can find out.

Thank you all! Most of the earlier coins are completely new to me, especially the Aemilius denarius which I have never seen before. My ancient collection is still quite small(20-30 coins) so I have only been buying coins that interest me and catch my eye, I'm yet to branch off into collecting any particular series of coin. It's nice to know that I haven't overpaid for the lot, I can sleep easy tonight Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the Byzantine is or are better pictures required?

Anoob, I tried researching the Sego sphinx bronze unit however very little turned up. Mainly using Spink and little info from the web I managed to put a small desciption together: From the Catuvellauni tribe based in Hertfordshire. Near the end of Tasciovanus's reign, coinage in the style of Tasciovanus appeared bearing the name of Sego, Dias, Andoco or Rues. They were said to be either rival contestants to the throne or that they were associates or 'sub-kings' of Tasciovanus keeping control of smaller areas within the Catuvellauni territory. This one was dug up along with two other Celtic coins from the same period in Canterbury. I would guess it dates to around 50BC-50AD?

Quote: I think the little symbol to the left of the bust indicates its from Serbia? Not guaranteed, 10 Mints put Delta behind the bust but for your coin its true, it was made in workshop 2 at Sirmium (55 km west of Belgrade). A pretty nice bust of Constantius Gallus too
