Gratz, wallet must be feeling the pain though!
On another note a copy of 7 is on 'that auction site' for £17.50 if anyone is interested, condition not great but the cheapest I've seen for a while.

I've always wanted a set but they were too expensive. You got yours for a good price, congrats.

Feeling rather pleased with myself right now also Just picked up a brand new copy of RIC 4 (the complete 3 part one printed in 2007) for less than £25 ($40), pretty much less than half of what it is anywhere else, 5 times less than in some places! I suspect I could be in for a long wait to get similar deals on the others!

I had been considering getting them volume by volume but it's just such a hassle. The only hting worse is trying to assemble a set of the BMC in Greek, Roman and Islamic. That will be my next project, and it will surely drive me half crazy and half broke. Sounds like good numismatic fun!

The full set of BMC Roman Empire is well worth the effort. A much better reference than RIC in my opinion for the period covered. BMC Greek is a different matter as they are all much older and out of print so do you go for the originals, the forni reprints or the modern print on demand versions. You might just ant to look here..... http://www.snible.org/coins/bmc/Regards, Martin

BMC Roman was reprinted a few years ago, making them more available than previously. I would suggest http://www.numislit.com or similar numismatic book auction firms. I got my "complete", (as far as they were done), set for around $250 at an auction.

Quote: I had been considering getting them volume by volume but it's just such a hassle. It is, and can be more expensive than in one hit but I only really need RICs 5 and 6, the others I just pick up when I see them 'strangely' cheep, which £25 is. I go years between buying RICs but unless I suddenly get interested in an area away from where I'm at at present its fine. I have access to all the books even though at present I don't own them all.

It's prohibitively expensive (in general) for those in Europe to buy books from the USA any more. There aren't too many numismatic book specialists on the European side of the pond but they do exist. Martin

Anyone have any experience with the lower cost softcover editions of the BMC Greek which have been coming out recently? Specifically, what is the quality of the plates in these reproductions. Is the quality like some of the Indian reprints which came out in the 70's and 80's of the BMC and Indian museums (Lahore, etc)?

Sorry to hear that. Yes, its much harder for me to procure books from your side of the pond nowadays as well. I believe all of the post offices of the world have conspired against book buyers about 5 years ago. :(
At least you have DNW and some other coin auctions that regularly have books in them as well. Also, Paul Withers is a nice used coin book dealer.

JCMworld, I have seen these reprints. Not worth it IMHO. BMC Greek is so old the major usage of them is the coin reference attributions. Most of the text you have to take with a grain of salt since there have been major changes in many areas.
The quality of the plates in these softcovers I find very lacking, plus they are not usually actual size. I had one softcover in my hand and compared it to the same volume from my Forni set, and the reproduction was so muddy in the softcover as to make it very hard to identify anything from them.

I agree. I bought a few but the plates are generally awful. Let's face it they are medium quality print runs of scans of old books. Martin
