Calling all experts. My coin dealer was offering a special where you get a free 90 percent silver half dollar with any online purchase. So I bought five F-VF mixed peace and Morgan dollars and picked them up today.

Two are 1923 Peace dollars and one looks different. My two year old told me "it's too sparkly."

So, what do you think?

Side by side, brighter one is larger and the one I'm concerned about.

It looks like it is a heavily cleaned Peace dollar. If you are wondering if it genuine, it looks right to me, but I would wait for a second opinion as well. You could also weigh it should weigh 26.73 grams.

Depends on the degree of wear on the "darker" one; the brighter one looks (by the sharpness of the reeding) to have seen very little if any circulation. Have a close look at the reeding all around the coin; if it were dipped - kinda looks that way - you might be able to see some toning left in the reeding from where it was held by tongs to dip.

Looks genuine but cleaned/dipped to me, too.

The reeding is right too, and that's usually the biggest tipoff as counterfeiters often don't get it correct.

Follow the steps here on The Black Cabinet's guide for a good non-destructive means to test them further:

Especially checking for magnetism and how they ring compared to one-another.

Thanks! Makes me feel better. My guy is very honest and I didn't think he'd sell me a fake, but this coin threw me off.

Don't see anything on this one that screams fake.

It looks ok. I would also add that the 1923 Peace dollar is not a popular coin to counterfeit.
