i was thinking they may have used a set of wrong sized date numbers on the die

A lot of repunching going on. I suspect every letter was punched seperately in the legends, producing a lot of variation and corrections. There is an R/E in GRATIA variety for 1826. The date is definitely repunched too--I'm unsure if it's over 1826, 1826/5 or something else. I specialize in overdates, and find shooting several date pics from different lighting angles often reveals an overdate if present.

I will try some photos in natural light in the morning here is the reverse for now .. this coin is a right bizzy bee
