The mint sold sets in acrylic cases like a proof set. These had Unc and Proof nickels.

What is the story behind these?
Do the business strike coins receive any special handling or finish?
What was the orignal sales price?
What is fair price for these now? (why does the '04 set command so much more?)
Do any of our members collect them?

Thanks for sharing

I have the 05 and I think it was around $7.00 from the mint (could of been less) I would not have it if my Brother had not given it to me as a gift. lol
anyway back to the set.the plastic case is not sealed . it will open by squeezing a corner.
yes the business strikes do look to be cleaner and a lot nicer than any I have seen before so they may be like the SMS sets ( had better care) the proof's are very nice also. and as for a fair rate now. maybe $20.00 but I could be high I don't sell coins (a lot) and I don't really buy a lot either I get most of my keepers from either roll searches or trades hope this answers your question

I have all three sets from the mint. If I remember correctly they where around $13.00 per set. I could not tell you what a fair price is for the sets. I have not been able to find any pricing for the sets. There is no value for the complete set in Coin values or in the RedBook. But the individual coins ar going for as low as $0.10 and as high as $300.00 a piece.

That's interesting...how are the individual coins identified as originating from this set?

I saw the sets at a coin club meeting. Another member was going on about how he suspected they had a special finish of some sort.

Later, I bid on an '05 set and won it for $7.69. Excited, I did a search on the '04 set and found it to be going for $30 or more. The '06 set doesn't do it for me.

Actually, I think the mint really messed up the series by not making the new obverse available in time for the '04 coins. The fact that the first two circulating L&C commems have the traditional obverse and the second two don't just doesn't compute. It's a real shame.
