Hello everyone, I am looking for some info about a 1964P dime that looks like it is a misstrike. I am looking to see if someone can help determine its condition and a value range (I know it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it). Anyway, This is a great site and I will continue surfing around here. Thanks in advance! Edited by vadonkey 02/11/2013 12:35 am

Welcome, vadonkey. Looks to me like a broadstrike, a coin struck without the usual retaining collar. Cool coins, but not vanishingly rare. Nice added value, probably anything from $50-100 if you found the right buyer. Better on the silver planchet you have than a newer one.

Welcome to CC!
Take the coin out of the 2x2 and supply better pictures. Dave is probably correct, my first gut was an off-center. You definately seem to have a genuine error coin either way.

New pics added to original post. It does look like a broadstrike after seeing a list of different error types. Sorry the pics aren't the best, I took them with a cell phone

The planchett is definitely struck off center. The way the I understand the value structure of these types of errors the more offcenter the more valuable the coin is.
It certainly does not hurt that it has happened to a silver coin. Great Find. Did you find in circulation either in a bank roll or in change. If so it is hard to believe that this coin could have lasted so long in the wild before you got it.

When I was a teenager my mom showed it to me and I made mention that I wanted that coin someday, well, before my mom passed she had written on a slip of paper that I was to get it. So I put it in a safe and forgot about it for almost 20 years until tonight while rummaging through the safe.
If it would have been worth enough to pay my kids college tuition (Not that I expected it to) I would sell it, but since its not....it's a keepsake that I will pass along to my kid someday.

I humbly think that passing it onto your kids with the story you mentioned would be more valuable that any amount that coin would bring. Don't know how old you kids are but perhaps waiting on the determinaton when your kids are closer to college could be a winner.
Congratulations on a winner and a potential family traditional pass down coin. I wish that I had something like that.
You got a winner anyway you go.

I don't think the coins will pay for it. But like ghostrider said, keep it and pass it on. It's still a nice coin and cool to own.

It will be a very nice keep sake. My dad had a 1964 D dime he pulled from circulation that he loved. I went ahead and had it slabbed and it came back as MS64. It is worth about $4 to anyone else but priceless to me. It is one of the coins my son really likes to look at.
The long time members are probably sick of me telling this story so I tell it to all new members every chance I get!

@Kelly, haha that's how I feel. My coins like to be with others. I know how you feel what a coin is giving to you. Like when I was given the silver dimes and quarters from my uncle. I can never sell them(or would want to!), I feel he wanted me to keep them within the family.
