Hi guys,

I'm one of the new ones around here and have a question on a commemorative. I searched and didn't find anything on this one.

I pulled out all the old coins I had the other day and there out of sight and out of mind was the 1984 Olympics commemorative coin my dad had given me way back then. It's still in the box with the treasury info that came with it and the little box to put it in. Are these things worth anything more than the melt down value?

The first of America's modern silver commemoratives.
I obtained one of these way back in 1984, for not much more than silver value at the time.
Still have it.

Assuming you are referring to the silver dollar and not the 1984 $10 gold coin that was also issued, I would agree with baseball21 and say $30 to $35 to another collector - a dealer would offer noticeably less.

Almost, but not quite.

The first US "modern silver commemorative" was the 1982 George Washington half-dollar that marked the 250th anniversary of his birth; the coin was 0.900 fine silver. It was followed in 1983 by the first type of silver dollar that celebrated the LA Olympics, they were struck at all three active US mints - Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco.

The 1984 LA Olympics silver dollar was thus the third type of modern US silver commemorative, it was also struck at all three US mints.

All of the coins were available in proof and uncirculated versions.

Thanks guys.

I just wanted to confirm what I had found very little on in my internet search.

It's Madi Gras down here where I'm at so, let me leave y'all with this, Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler, that's Cajun French for Let the Good Times Roll.

They'll be rolling today from New Orleans, LA to Mobile, AL and possibly on towards Pensacola, FL but, I'll be out of the potential rain probably sitting her staying dry near the computer.

Y'all have a good day and thanks again.

To get the 1983D and 1983S Uncirculated Dollars, one had to buy a three coin set that also included the 1983P UNC dollar. The USM issue price for the set was $89.00

They're readily available at the bay.

(Thanks again commems for your 'archive' on these. Extremely helpful)

I inherited a 1984 Olympic proof set from my stepfather about 20 years ago, won't sell it, will pass it on to my daughter. On ebay they've been selling for over $900. The gold is .4838 oz. which accounts for most of the value. Here's some stock pics of the set.
