There's no way I would entrust PVC pipe to my coins. I've pulled up plenty of old PVC pipe in the ground that was falling apart. It takes a long time, but it will eventually fail.

If he wants to use pvc pipe, why not hide it in plain site instead of in the ground. Stick it with some other PVC pipe cut to different lengths in the garage or basement.
