approx, how many boxes do you go trough per day or week.
Well...that is a real good question. If I'm leisurely going through boxes I would average 1 box a day or around 5 a week. You always need to take a little time away or after a while it would seem like work and not a hobby anymore.
A big determination factor will be what your are trying to get out of your coin roll hunting experience. Are you just looking for dates to fill folders or holes in your collection? Are you a variety / error hunter like myself? Do you collect only Canadian coins or do you also collect US and maybe foreign? Are you sorting out the coppers from the zincs? Each variable will increase the amount of time you spend per box.
I'm a variety and error hunter but, I also separate coppers and zincs to sell the coppers to a local buyer. I can not actually tell you if I have an example of each date for any particular denomination. Well...I do know I do not have 1922 - 1927 Canadian Cents yet. They are on my wish list but since the Canadian Cent is now fading away...I may have to resort to buying them.
Before the Feb 3 cut off date I purchased aprox 41 boxes of cents to make sure I have some to go through for a little while. I have aprox 9 boxes left to search.
Since I also collect US errors and varieties...I set aside any BU US cents for later examination. I also have a generalized list of dates I set aside for
US coins that I know have some great known varieties to search on a rainy day. Collecting
US coins is a whole other beast compared to Canadian coins. It is up to each collector to decide what holds their interest and how much time they are willing to put forth towards their goals.
If you really want to get into collecting errors...you really need to examine each individual coin so you do not miss anything. I used to do that in the beginning. Over the years...I have started to recognize certain errors or varieties on a coin without the use of a loupe or magnifier. It is not something that comes quickly.
If you manage to sort a box every day or two...that's fairly common. How fast you sort is going to be up to you. For the boxes of coins I picked up...I have done as many as 3 boxes in a day. That is with sorting the coppers and setting aside the dates to search at a later time. Usually by the end of the night my eyes a bugging out after 3 boxes.
