Agreed. It's a big fat nothing burger overall but we haven't seen such a violent move in a while. The dow too had the biggest swing in 3mos.

Overall, ugly ugly price action for gold and silver off the yearly highs.

Reversals usually mean that, we are going to see price reverse and seeing how the selling was steady right into the close of the PM markets, more down tomorrow should not be a shocker.

That said, some context is necessary: its all about time frames. If you been holding silver and gold since their big moves started earlier on shorter time frames before the beginning of the year, you are still sitting on nice profits.

If you been holding miners, silver, gold since early Feb.. you still are in good shape.

If you played the breakout solely, you had to be very nimble but again, if you been watching price action, you would be on the watch for the reversal and to jump off.

The other thing is- notice on gold, we were up what, 7 days in a row, coming INTO the break out at yearly highs? It should be no surprise that it was weak and fizzled out today.

Sometimes, a breakout can thunder its way through a yearly high/yearly low, even after being up say 6 days. HOWEVER, the duration, or how long it carries past that break out point becomes very short lived.

Ideally, a nice clean break out happens within a 1-2 days of the point where it triggers. That allows momentum to carry price past the break out/break down and lets it expand, lessening the chance for a reversal.

That is something we havent really quite seen in gold and silver. Most moves thus far have been gap ups into the break out or continued buying, day after day, into the break out year.

I would suspect, based on experience, that during these summer months we dont see any long lasting break outs, this time of the year not much happens with most of the market out. There will be some assets that will continue to in a stealth mode grind higher, others will drop but most of the time, from here till September I wouldnt pin much on major moves in gold and silver. Thats not to say something could happen but again, I would lean on probabilities being high we just see more of this range bound trade.

That in itself is not a bad thing. Gold, silver are still in UP TRENDS. The more they keep probing higher, pricking and pricking the upper lines, the higher the chance that this pattern we are seeing now gets broken. Remember too that again, there is TONS of overhead resistance, a lot of overhead supply.

Wow, what a wild ride. It's a good reminder that sometimes the only thing predictable about the markets is unpredictability. I was expecting a slow grind and yet we got a wild roller coaster breaking new yearly highs only to plummet. I guess if someone really knew where prices were going to be in a week, a month, or a year, it would make for a great movie as they would, in theory, have unlimited money.

I did shift some funds out of the stock market today. With my luck, the market will double in the next 6 months.

Just a few points

welcome to one of the most boring, nonevent, and slow/choppy time period in markets, the summer months.

Just briefly, gold bounced off 1263 and closed higher. That number should ring a bell with you if you been following closely. That is one of our break out points from earlier in the year, so zero surprise that gold fell into that area and bounced... remember, PRICE has MEMORY.

Gold remains range bound but has set new ranges as of now. If we break that 1263, that might bring us back down to the previous range.

Silver also doing the range bound act. One item I find interesting is the lack of a new 52 high last week while gold did manage to make a 52 high. For now we have silver bouncing between low 17s and loosely the high 17s. For now, silver is probing that lower part of the range.

The PMs are still in up trends but continue to be range bound.

@cascade

I am pretty much on full blow vacation mode on my end. Market really isn't going to do much going forward. I have the vast majority of my account in cash, with some money in a slow moving grinding stock in an up trends and in some commodities that are in up trends as well.

Dont really pay too close attention to the market at this time of the year as I would normally do and my trades pretty much stop from June and wont pick up until late September.

As far as Brexit, have no opinion, I, we, havent paid much attention to it. Anyone who is talking about it in the financial media and giving opinions is going to be dead wrong, such as anyone saying we are going to have a Black Friday, is just talking their book and will be clown slapped.

Everyone probably doesn't realize this but nothing really big happens in the summer months while everyone is away. This Brexit really is pure hype, noise and the English pound is not going to crater nor are financial markets going to be in turmoil if the UK leaves. .. which again, who cares if they stay or leave... our markets are just fine.

Brexit's playing out with pms. At first when the polls closed and the few precincts that reported were leaning stay pm's started going down. Now the leave camp looks on top and pm's are up. This is fun to watch and correlate

... and see, to me, I am not watching the polls, could care less what happens BUT what I see, when I look at gold right now as it bounces... gold closed today at 1263.10 today.

Number sound familiar? It should, as 1263.90 on 2/11/16 was a break out 52 high area. Therefore, it should be ABSOLUTELY NO SURPRISE, and no coincidence that its bouncing from the lower end of the range.. AGAIN.

Remember how I always talk about "price has memory"?. There are ALWAYS areas where sellers step in and buyers step in.

So to me, I am not surprised at all, in fact its very comical and almost predictive that gold would come into an area that has been constant support and bounces have happened, and look whats happening right now.

Man, I love how price action works, once you master it, you are in control and are free to both profit on a regular basis and limit your risk and losses.

@Cascade,

Watching the same thing. It looks like price is leveling off as vote narrowing again. If remain pulls ahead, do you expect Gold to drop and the pound to rise?

Cascade, you nailed it. As the vote gets closer, gold goes down. As the vote widens toward Brexit, gold goes up and the pound goes down. Amazing to watch.

Just two things...

1- overnight futures in this case really are just that, if you are working contracts tonight then whats going on matters. if you dont have anything in the futures market then whats happening really means nothing

2- do not be surprised if when you wake up tomorrow morning, the losses have all been absorbed and silver and gold are back to being lower or flat. What matters to us in the US is what happens when our cash markets open up.
