..HEY Basbal! I'm a Scientist! Y'all do know there is no degree of "Scientist"?

Of course you do Basbal! Just having a little fun!

But seriously something that bothers me about SOME Scientist is that many of them forget what we learned in University; Evaluate the facts and not the biases.

It's good to formulate a hypothesis. But a Good Engineer, one type of Scientist, knows that new data can change everything. Most hypotheses are working hypotheses that constantly change and evolve until it is either proved or disproved.

I guess all I want to say is that even I'm bothered by papers that are published without rigorous peer review, as though they were cast in stone.

LOL, personally I separate out the ones with the political agendas. They may have the degree but working data or cherry picking things to make an argument isn't science to me.

Very well said. Thats really what I was getting at how so many things come out now and are taken as gospel with little to no review. I'm not sure when the switch over happened but for a lot of stuff it seems that instead of pushing things as a theory theyre being presented as fact when like you pointed out those "facts" constantly change with new data.

Dont get me wrong science does do a lot of good work over all and there are a lot of good scientists, but theres enough now pushing agendas that things should be questioned more. I feel the same way with medical research, crime research ect, all of it needs to be challenged more. A real researcher would appreciate the challenge as it forces them to strengthen their position or explore new areas and in the end everyone benefits.

I don't think we will be able to make silver in labs like diamonds. Diamonds are just allotropes of carbon, and we have lots of carbon to play with,

Maybe there is a way to produce it like they produce gold? I saw a bit on a youtube show about a bacteria that apparently "made" gold. After watching it, it wasn't quite like the magic of a pigs being able to eat apples and magically make bacon. They just purify AuCl.

Of course, who knows what they heck they will do. They made californium in a lab so you could be right. In our lifetimes though, it doesn't seem like it would ever be worthwhile. Californium is $60 per micro gram, or $60000000 per gram.

We'll dig up our landfills first. Not very glamorous, but probably cheaper.

Now if they find a way to get all the gold from the ocean water... apparently there is 20mil tons there, but no good way to get it.

Did anyone catch the mint saying that Gold bullion sales are next to nothing and on track for the lowest monthly totals in a year?

Demand Destruction.

Here's a in-depth article explaining the major turning points in GLD or SPDR gold shares since its beginning 9 years ago and why this year's earlier
mass exodus of capitol might be on a reversal course with last week's builds and could effectively signal the end of the present downtrend. Good read

I wonder how the gold in some jewelry can be weighed to sell as 'scrap' metal when it is 'filled' as I have seen on some TV sales shows? It is 14K gold but weighted. Just an aside since the question kind of matches the title of the thread.

Broseph, the technical details of gold extraction from sea water have been worked out for a long time. That is why I said that it becomes cost effective to do so at around $3200/oz. The article you posted affirmed that it is possible just not "cost effective".

The first attempt at this was in the 1930's after Bromide was effectively extracted from Sea Water. As the article states it takes a lot of volume; as well as a fair amount of energy.

At some point well probably figure it out. When that is is anyones guess but thats why I have a huge problem with predictions of running out decades down the line. Technology is changing to much. Even salvaging has brought back huge hauls of the metals from sunken ships and we can expect that to continue. Theres an enormous amount sitting on the ocean floor from 2 thousand+ years of ships going down carrying it. The only real way to know what the future will bring is to wait for it to be present day. Remember how we were all supposed to have flying cars by now

I buy custom star wars figures (often pieces kenner never made small role characters or high dollar repos) for like 15 to 20 each from guy in UK who makes them and sell over here as high as 124.99 down to 49.99 or so.....

I told guy, the reason they are popular is they are made in LIMITED low numbers and are as rare often as the piece they represent. Many realize they will never be able to either find or afford the pieces they represent so many collect and add them to collection....

But if they were MASS PRODUCED in 1000z I could not give them away, simple supply and demand....

Thats a good example Hawk. But supply and demand are completely divorced from the Commodities market. Well, maybe not completely. Rather it is about rumors or speculations on the future shortage or surplus of a commodity that they are betting on.

There has never been a time since the explosion in the price of PMs that there was a shortage of Silver. There have been times when.....say the mint ran out of blanks. But that was not because of a Silver Shortage, it was because of a faulty forcast by the Mint.

For instance a short time back it was reported that we had more Oil in Storage than we have had since the early 70s. Yet the price didn't go down. In fact it went up. There are a lot of people that apologize for Big Oil, but the CEO of Exxon, in Congressional testamony, admitted that the price of a gallon of gas was inflated Forty (40) percent because of Speculation and that absent the Commodities market a gallon of gas would be between $2.00 and $2.40 a gallon. A fact that even OPEC states, over and over.

The point is that in Commodities the actual supply and demand have very little to do with sell prices. They can influence a price point when a report comes out. Yet several times this summer announcements were made about a glut of Oil on the market; and after these announcements the pump price actually went UP. Then in the aftermath of the discovery of a surplus the price point came down, and settled at the original, pre-announcement price.

If you chart pump price; barrel price, and supply; you get a complete disconnect.

Lol..ok this is about Silver and Gold, but I think it well illustrates that true supply and demand have little do with the Commodities market.

Obama conveyed all the financial big wigs yesterday for an emergency meeting at the white house.
The last time this happened gold went down below $1200. As I write this, both gold and silver are retreating in Asian markets.

Ok gonna share some quick trade ideas for anyone that's at home right now or mobile. They could trigger today with the FOMC minutes... they might not.

These would work best executed in real time fashion. Otherwise your probabilities drop and go against you.

more to follow in a second

ok lets start with silver first

SLV- buy @ 22.60, ready to break out of range. If it doesn't move past 22.60 then do nothing, no buy signal.

AGQ- buy @ 24.44, ready to break out of range. If it doesn't move past 24.44, do nothing, do not buy.

now to gold

GLD- buy @ 137.63 ready to break out of range. If it doesn't get past that do not buy.

UGL - buy @ 59.91 ready to break out of range. If it doesn't get past that number do not buy.

GLL short @ 81.43, readyto break below its range. if it doesn't get past the number do not buy.

1-2 pt stop MAX on those entries when/if they trigger.

Remember, even with probabilities on ones side with a trade does NOT guarantee success, therefore risk must be managed by having an exit in case the trade goes against you.
