Here's another newp. First of these older copper pieces I have bought. Is an "As" the same as Sestertius or AE dupondius?
MARCUS AURELIUS. 139-161 AD, As, Rome Mint, (Struck AD 145) 9.58g. Obverse: AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII FIL Bare head right. Reverse: HILARITAS / SC Hilaritas standing left holding long palm and cornucopiae. RIC 1260 (Antoninus Pius)
If it helps any .... The Sestertius was used as the measure of wealth for the most part of the Empire. A man such as Crassus would have said "I made MDCXVI Sestertii" today. Think of the (brass) Sestertius as a dollar ... The (brass) Dupondius as a 50 cent and the As is the 25 cent coin.
