And resell to a dealer for $2K? I bet you get beat to heck and back on Enviromental Damaged labels trying to resell though I never tried to sell one. Also, I wonder if that condition would continue to deteroprate in the slab depending on what mystery checmical it has eating it.

If you have the budget to purchase a 1856 Flying Eagle I would wait to get a nice problem free example. According to numismedia a problem VG is 7,200 so this this one is hardly bargin priced.

This is a " You have 750-1,000 examples out there potentially, so I will ask whatever I want so you can say you own one" price. I would think along your lines, someone willing to pay $4K for that would spend $7K for something problem free. That coin falls in a very odd interest level financially speaking.

If I am going to invest in an 1856 FE it would be the highlight of my collection. It would be the purchase of a lifetime for me. I would want it to be a problem free coin even if it is in a lower grade than the one he has.

This seller has been selling this same coin over and over for months on icollector: http://www.icollector.com/1856-FLYI...LS_i15325529Obviously he is just buying his coin back on icollector while he is simultaneously listing the coin for sale on ebay. The true market seems to value this coin at $3,300

This coin has problems that are easy to see. I have seen this coin numerous times over the past couple of years. The problem is this coin has now become 'stale'. It has been over-exposed to the public. I'm glad I could be of some help to you joeycoinz

Quote: eBay No disrespect intended, but a more descriptive title for your thread would be helpful. Maybe "1856 Flying Eagle cent on ebay... Thoughts?"

So I called that dealer. I said I would offer $3200 cash, he told me to go pound salt. "$4,000 cash or nothing".......ok nothing it is.

He must have overpaid for it himself, or hes delusional about how many people will want to spend 4k on a details coin. I agree with the others if your going to spend 3 or 4k on a coin it better either be problem free, significantly cheaper than non problems ones, an extreme rarity, or the only surviving ones all have problems.

basebal, an 1856 FE IS an extreme rarity, no matter what its condition is. A problem free coin is 7 grand. Knock half for a details grade and you are in the ballpark he is in. That is the range for an AG coin.
So, I am not so sure I wouldn't pay 4 for that coin. Presuming I had 4 grand to spend on a coin.

Smoke I was thinking more along the lines that if you have 4 grand to spend on a coin you obviously make a good amount of money. I'm going to assume that people who do get coins in that range arent saving 50 or 100 dollars a month for years to get it. If you can come up with the 4 grand why not just save a little longer and get a problem free one?
I did over simplify it too lumping all problem coins together. I'm not a fan of the look of the one in question especially at that price. If it was a small scratch or something that gave it the details or even a cleaning that didnt mark it up everywhere I wouldnt be opposed to something like that.
