Hankash, there is a wealth of info in previous threads. I recommend doing a search.

As far as preserving, keep in a cool, dry place.
Bank safe deposit boxes are not as ideal as you might think because they tend to be more humid (to keep documents from becoming brittle).
Individual holders are recommended because they keep the coins from banging into one another.
As far as holders go, there are different opinions. But definitely stay away from older materials that might contain PVC (plastic) or sulphur (paper/cardboard). Newer coin supplies will not contain these materials in quantities likely to damage your collection if stored under typical conditions.
If you use cardboard holders with circular mylar windows (aka, 2x2's), take care around the staples.
More expensive holders like airtites are just about ideal for preservation and storage. But if you have a lot of coins, they can get expensive.

Now, if by "preserving" you meant...ahem...chemically: DON'T.

Don't clean, don't preserve. You will only end up messing up your coins.

Although you will find many arguments about how or when to clean a coin on this site, it is not for beginners (if anyone). If you get around to posting pictures of your coins, you may receive some advice about actions you should take to preserve a particular copper or two. But until then...

Please don't clean your coins.
