Hi , I have set my mind on getting a roman gold coin , I'm not worried which one but I've decided I want one to go with the hammered one and maybe start a collection of gold coins through the ages . Where is the best place to get'it from ( not too expensive) or are they traded anywhere ? Thanks for any info

Although you may find some real gold Roman coins for sale on e**y, beware. I was lucky to win an auction, six years ago, on e**y, for a real gold (Solidus) of Valens. I would recommend you either buy direct from VCoins or if you are in London, try Spink. http://www.spink.com/departments.aspx?id=1204

I agree don't buy any gold from ebay. I have no gold in my collection and don't really want any, as beautiful as they are I would rather spend the money on a hand full of silver than one gold coin.

I have a fair few hammered coins but since finding this site I've been obsessed with roman and trying to decide which direction to go with collecting and because I do well finding a few bits I'm going to collect something I very rarely find .

Since you are clearly coming across some excellent examples of Roman coins, learning about it will be to your advantage. Can you tell us the name of this company that has offered to buy the Carausius coin, if it is a recommendable company, we can find out more about it for you. That Carausius is very rare, and "the cards are in your hand" to ask the price you like.

Hi Masis , it was Roma numismatics but it was through a 3rd party , I didn't speak to them directly but had no reason to distrust them . I was offered £500 but I'd rather trade for one I want .

I have purchased from Roma several times and have always been completely satisfied.

I have found gold Byzantines for close to spot at local shops. Of that is here on this side of the pond. Ancients are just not popular where I am. I have been tempted ... but with gold over 16 I will be waiting; heck with gold over 15 I will be waiting.

Hi Masis , I posted the coin on the forvm website at the same time as this one hoping someone could help and Mauseus was helping id it and suggested letting the BM know . To be honest , I'm not trying to be too pushy with it as I'm not in a hurry to get rid of it , it's just nice to know your options .

I'm glad "Mauseus" knows about it and that he helped you in identifying it. It is perhaps the "Koh-i-Noor diamond" in the "crown of your amazing finds". Without a doubt, you will find more amazing coins from our nation's history.

I've just been reading through an old thread on forvm and it's suggesting the BM might trade coins for examples they really like ? That might be the best route ?
