The "2 1/2" cent token is early, left over from the days of "Two drinks for 25c". As it is a bit hard to give change, and at that time, every cent (or half-cent) was valuable, enter the "2 1/2" cent token. Give the bartender a quarter, get your drink, a dime and the token in change. If you didnt' bring the token back, the bartender is better off. Most of the time you see 12 1/2 cent tokens, or "This token and 10c Good for a Drink", or somesuch.
