I started some research on a coin my son found but very quickly realised I was not making much progress. I have had various suggestions from ebay forum but nothing specific to identify where the medal is from or how old it is. Please see images which shows a gold metal coloured coin shaped pendant approx 3 cm in diameter.

It's not a coin but a replica made for jewelery. The right side picture is based on a "square in circle" type dirhem.

This is the advice I have had from ebay:-
"It is a muslim token of the mosque or temple type. These are common religious items in Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent (and probably elsewhere).

We might be able to recognize the mosque, shrine or tomb that is represented. The kufic style script is a throwback to an older style and probably does not indicate great age. If it is brass, it is probably less than 100 years old. In addition to the kalima-e-tayyabah inscription in the center, the four quarters have the complete names of the first four Caliphs, the Rashidun."
