With a few dollars burning a hole in my pocket I've been watching the 1909 VDB S cent. Mostly looking for PCGS MS 65 RB I noticed there is a huge $1000+ swing between same grade auctions.

With so many examples for sale I would expect to see more stability in price. What am I missing?

Some of its probably eye appeal and some of its the nature of auctions. Sometime youll get a few people who really want that one and run the price up and other times there just wont be much interest and there will only be 1 bid

What auctions are you looking at? Completed auctions on ebay?

Eye appeal, overgraded/undergraded, time sold, venue, etc, are all possible factors for the difference in price. Could you post the pictures or links to the coins that you are referring to?

The 1909 S VDB is not all that scarce. 484,500 of them were struck.

True, but how many MS65 RB are left out of that original mintage? If you have the funds, just wait and watch and you can find a deal. Patience is a virture

Over the past 12 months, I do see that $1,000 range you're talking about. As noted, eye appeal is a big factor. Others include the auction house, the grading company, the amount of Red remaining, amount of luster remaining, and time of year (seasonal factors).

While a $1,000 range sounds like a lot, when you consider it's $2750 to $3750 it makes more sense. Most of them came in right around $3000 to $3200 with buyer's premium (if applicable).

ANY MS65RB more than 100 years old should turn a coin collector's head.

Eye appeal and any evidence of carbon spots... a carbon spot or two no matter how small will really ding the value.
