... Bronze, 41.9mm. By Jean-Jacques Barre. Fuld FR.M.SO.3. Obv. Conjoined busts of Benjamin Franklin, BIENFAISSANCE DU GENIE and Abbe Montyon (1733-1820), GENIE DE LA BIENFAISSANCE. Rev. Society For Portraits of Useful Men around an oak wreath encloses Subscribers Associated for the Propagation of the History of Benefactors of Humanity. Plain edge which has suffered a small drill hole unfortunately visible on Obv & Rev.
Very cool! Might make for an interesting debate, but I would prefer the benevolence of genius over the genius of benevolence any day. Montyon gave tons of money, to good causes, in his lifetime. But what Franklin gave to the world made sure that the only time he would stand in anyone's shadow would be on the front of this medal!
