So a parcel came through the door containing 2 coins - an emperor I've been wanting for ages and an emperor I thought id never own!
You might recognise these coins from MonkeyBean's previous posts! A great thanks to him.
Heres the Allectus (same as mal posted in the last week!):
VIRTVS AVG - full legends, well centered - a lovely green patina (which has got me a bit worried so I'm keeping it in distilled water a bit - it looked a bit powdered on the surface so I'm playing it safe). I'm also cleaning this with a strict 'no sharp implements' rule. Soaking will be relied on to loosen the dirt so a Qtip can dislodge it.
The reverse shows something very key to british history - both roman and empire times. The Navy was important to Allectus to protect him from Rome coming and retrieving their territory - as it still is for the defence of our lovely island. You can see the lil' Britons in there! The quality and good preservation of this combined with its historical importance to my nation means it has a place with my favourites!

And another, Valerian:
Very little silver remaining but the heavily debased antoninianus looks really cool - a kind of dirtied silver. The radiate crown and VALE are really nicely preserved! Perfect. The only roman emperor captured - by shapur - apparently then used as a footstool and after death he was stuffed and kept in a persian temple.
Believe it or not, with a light you can in fact read the reverse inscription. It reads VICTORIA AVGG. Really looks blank from the front and I only noticed whilst trying to find the reverse type - Victory left, resting on shield, holding palm.

And a milestone has been reached - Allectus is officially important person 40 - Valerian is 41 and if I can get an ID on another coin I have (its pretty solid) then Trebonianus Gallus may be 42. On my way to 50! The longest period of roman history I have without an emperor is now 30 years - 222AD to 251AD.
