I came across a TPG (NGC) graded AG 1916d Merc dime. The dealer was asking $425.00 (before negotiation. What would be a reasonable price to obtain one in this condition? Thanks.

That seems like a fair price already. $425 seems to be right around, and even on the lower end of what they are selling for on heritage and ebay. So already you have a good price. I bet you could get him down to under $400. Good Luck!

If there's no damage, just good, honest wear ... Buy it!

That's a good price for a NGC grade problem free 16-D, confirming that is graded as AG-3.

I'm going to take a second look at this dime tomorrow. There was a second one on offer in the same condition, but raw. I didn't look at the raw one and didn't ask the price. I'm pretty sure I know enough to spot a fake. I'm going to see if the dealer is offering a substantial discount for the raw one. I can throw it in with some dealer-friends submissions to PCGS so I wouldn't even have to pay for the slabbing fee. If I can get pics for both I'll toss them up in here before I pull the trigger.

Here is a pic of the NGC slabbed AG-3:

1916-D-Merc-Dime-In-Ag

The obverse is the same, except for a scratch that runs from 9 to 11 o'clock; not very big but noticeable.

Kind of had trouble checking this against the 4 known reverses for the 1916-D, since the RPM's are not so evident in this grade. Due to the location of the mm, I would say this is reverse die 1?

I checked the raw one at the shop. The slabbed one was in better condition.

Do any of the Merc experts here think this 1916-D looks legit?

No expert, but it looks like 1. Too far gone to see any evident die-crack.
