Hello this is my first post on a coin forum I am relatively new to collecting. I recently found a 1949 Jefferson nickel that felt different from the other nickels I was going through so I weighed it and it came out to 6.7 grams but I cannot find anything online about a nickel weighing this much can anybody help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. the coin itself is in very rough condition I had to use a loupe to get the date off of it and it is thicker than my other nickels it also seems to be composed of a different metal any information would be greatly useful thank you.

Sounds like a fake or wrong metal. Post a photo please. Perhaps, welcome!

You really need to post some photos (higher resolution, the better) with exact weight, diameter and edge photos as the coin could be a genuine error struck on a foreign planchet, or a PMD (Post Mint Damage) Dryer Coin.

Just a question: How would a coin being dried in a dryer add 1.7 grams to it?

The pictures are out of focus, but from what I see I would say it is a counterfeit. Probably a lead alloy fake. So it was either someone goofing around or it is a contemporary counterfeit.

Setrips for picture taking. Set the coin down. And try using the macro feature. It will be the little flower icon.

It looks like there is copper coming through on the obverse, so I don't think it is cast lead. However it doesn't look "right". This has me interested Better pics would be helpful.

Even Monticello looks "wavy" on the reverse. It could be the pic but yeah, it looks weird.
