I couldn't find any information about a melt or anything like that. I'm wondering why they're many multiples the price of a 1927, or 1927-S even though they actually minted more. I know first year of issue tends to be more popular, but I would think that might add 20% to the value at the most.

Anyone have insight on this?

I've never seen a photo which really did justice to a 1921. Compared to all the other Peace dollars, it's like looking at a cameo in the bottom of a dish. I believe it's this depth of strike that creates the premium price. The irony is that the strike quality itself is almost always poor, and other than the depth effect the 1921 isn't usually very attractive.

The 1921 Peace dollar is struck in high relief compared to the rest of the series. This in effect creates a one year type coin. Type coin collectors as well as Peace dollar collectors need one of these dollars to have a truly complete set. Another good example of this is the 1859 Indian Head cent. It is worth considerably more than the 1865 even though more of them were made.
