I have just been relocated to Ottawa. Right now I live in the Gatineau side of the river. Do you folks know any good store to swing by? Currently, I am interested more in bullion and classic coins than in the NCLTs. The RCM and the Bank of Canada Currency Museum are definitely on my list to visit. I just need to figure out the bus routes.

There are a few: Universal Coins is on Bank st @ Hunt Club. I personally think its the most over-priced store in town, but thats my opinion. Ashbrook Coins in located on Richmond Rd near Woodroffe and is a great spot where you can grab all sorts of items. Studio 17 Coins and Collectibles is located at Richmond @Robertson in the same plaza as the old Pizza Hut. Best little store for treasure hunting. Coins are always priced less the the cheapest sold on ebay. Hope this helps!

I would have to agree that Universal is often priced quite high. That being said I have had lots of success with them for NCLT stuff at quite good prices. I also have done quite well with junk silver from them. I am hopeful that at some point I will get out to Almonte to see Sean Issacs at his store Alliance Coin and Banknotes. I haven't had a chance to visit the stores others that AZTAMT suggested.
Also try the RA coin show which happens the 2nd Sunday of every month from 9:30-3 as it has a few local dealers present with great prices.

Also, join the Coin Club there in Ottawa .. one of the most active in Canada. You will find lots of folks with similar interests there, as well as tips on "where to find". Maybe SPP will chime in on the particulars as to times and dates.

My store of choice is Sean Isaacs, out in Almonte - probably more so for the conversation than the coins, but I have bought some nice pieces there.

Sean Isaacs first. As soon as I manage to arrange a lift, I intend to join the Almonte coin club.
I like UC because of the saturday morning chat. I've bought some spectacular stuff there - no complaints
Don't have anything to say about the others.

Alliance in Almonte is the nicest store in the area, though not exactly on a bus route.
I did not know about the place in BC (bells corners) so thanks AZTAMT. I will check them out.
Haven't been to Ashbrook since they reopened but it was a good store years ago before the owner passed away.
I always find Universal cramped and not much on display but they are ok. Have purchased there in the past and being close to South Keys, they are definitely easy to get to via bus.
Welcome to the NCR Amaths.

Thank you all for the suggestions and warm words. I'm really looking forward to checking them out. How are the shows at the RA center? Is it worth to go, say, in terms of finding good varieties and deals on bullion and junk silver? It would be quite a bus ride for me.

Honestly, I only go because of the opportunity to chat with a few friends.
You only have to go once a year, that is the frequency the inventory changes ...
But this is MY opinion

I would say it really depends what you're looking for. Lots of common lower graded stuff, if you want key dates and higher grades though it becomes difficult I have found. I enjoyed the show a ton when I got started but looking for some of the key dates now I am not being nearly as succesful and often I can get them for better prices online when they do have them.

I have shopped lots at Ashbrook, haven't been there much since Andrew passed. I learned a lot from Andrew. He used to give great deals. After his passing, the deals went away. Thus I stopped going. Not sure what it is like now, but I thought Dana might close up shop. Maybe she did. She was a very very nice person. I think I will head back there soon now that I know it is still there. Sean from Alliance Coins also has some great deals, every year I wait for his Boxing day sale...big savings. As far as talking with him, not much as every time I go in he is usually chatting it up with someone else. UC as well, had some nice stuff. Only been there about 3 times. I have also attended the RA show and it is as mentioned, very busy at times. Great bunch of folks there.
AZTAMT, thanks for the Studio location, never heard of them, but definitely will visit. There are private dealers as well that I have dealt with. One gent is the Ottawa Coin Man, great guy. You can make a viewing appointment at his apartment and the rest is history. Like this place, there is a ton of knowledge that is shared, all you have to do is ask and they offer assistance. My 5 cent.

Hello, I live in Vancouver and I think that members who live in Ottawa might reply this thread. The RCM held "Strike the Snake Medallion" activity both in Vancouver and Ottawa boutiques in February. Therefore, there are 2 different snake medallions. One is Vancouver Snake Medallion and the other is Ottawa Snake Medallion. If you have went to Ottawa boutique to strike the Ottawa snake medallion, I can trade the Vancouver snake medallion with your Ottawa snake medallion so that we both can have Vancouver and Ottawa snake medallion on hand. Actually some Ottawa friends in CCF have traded the medallion with me and I really appreciate their help. However, when my friends see my Ottawa snake medallion, they ask me to trade some for them. If you have Ottawa snake medallion available for trade, please feel free to send a message to me. Thanks.
